JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University women's basketball team posted a 98-44 win over Reinhardt (Ga.) University Saturday afternoon in the season opener. Union (1-0) sent Reinhardt to a 2-3 record on the season.
Union was paced with five players in double figures led by junior guard
Amy Philamlee with a career-high 32 points. Philamlee was nearly perfect for the night, going 11-of-12 from the field, 5-of-5 from 3-point range, and 5-of-5 from the free throw line. Philamlee missed her first field goal attempt of the game, then made 11 straight over the remainder of the game.
Union opened the game with a 7-0 run capped by a 3-pointer from
Astrid Huttemann. Over the next 12 minutes, the two teams played fairly even ball with Union holding a nine-point lead, 27-18.
However, Union took over as the Lady Bulldogs outscored Reinhardt 19-7 over the final six minutes to lead 46-25 at the half.
The second half was dominated by Union. The Lady Bulldogs led by as many as 55 points (98-41) before taking the 98-44 final.
Union shot 57 percent from the field in the game, including 67 percent in the second half. Union was 45 percent from the 3-point line, making 13-of-29. Union also made 75 percent of their free throws (15-20). Union forced 29 turnovers in the game, getting 37 points off turnovers in the game.
Union was led by Philamlee with 32 points. Huttemann added 17 points including 5-of-8 3-pointers. Freshman guard
Tymeria Franklin from Bolivar, Tenn. scored 15 points in her college debut.
Chelsea Bodiford added 11 points, with three 3-pointers, and
Shelby Ashcraft scored 10 points.
LaTesa McLaughlin dished out 12 assists in the game.
Reinhardt was led by Makensi Block with 11 points, while Erika Woodfin added nine points. Reinhardt shot 43 percent from the field, 31 percent (4-13) from long range, and 80 percent (4-5) from the free throw line.
Up next for Union will be a road game at NCAA DII No. 3 Clayton State (Ga.) Tuesday, November 19 at 4:30 p.m. central time.
