Union men explode for 100-56 win over Central Baptist

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University men's basketball team posted a 100-56 victory over Central Baptist (Ark.) College Saturday at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Union improved to 2-0 on the season, while Central Baptist dropped to 0-4.
                     
Union's Pedro Faller drained six 3-pointers on his way to a game-high and career-high 24 points. Faller added four assists and three rebounds to complete his career night. Freshman Ashanti Day continued his fast start to the season with a double-double including 11 points and 14 rebounds. AJ Roberts added a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds, while Corieon Pearson scored 19 points, three 3-pointers, and seven assists.
 
Union led 44-25 at the break that included a slow start. Union led just 16-13 with 14 minutes left in the half. However, Union posted an 8-0 run sparked by a three pointer from Day. Union extended their first lead to the 19-point halftime advantage following a 3-pointer from Faller.
 
In the second half, Union continued to stretch the lead. With 2:45 left to play, Union held their largest lead of 49 points, 97-48. Union reached the 100 mark with 1:06 left in the game on a jumper from Miguel Martinez.
 
Union grabbed 62 rebounds in the game, just six shy of the Union record of 68 rebounds set back in 1998. Union shot 46 percent from the field, 45 percent from long range (14-31), and 67 percent (16-24) from the free throw line.
 
Central Baptist was led by Andre Brown with 12 points. Michael Stevenson and Tony Brewster each added 10 points. The Mustangs shot 33 percent from the field, 19 percent (4-21) from 3-point range, and 60 percent (6-10) from the free throw line.
 
Up next for Union will be a third straight home game to open the season, Saturday, November 23 at 4:00 p.m. versus William Woods (Mo.).
