JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University women's soccer team played No. 6 West Florida close Friday evening, but the visiting Argos held off a furious Lady Bulldogs rally to escape the Smith Memorial Soccer Complex with a 2-1 win. The defeat was the first home loss for Union this season. Union University slips to 4-4-3 overall and 2-2-2 in the Gulf South Conference. West Florida raises their record to 8-0-3, 5-0-1 in the GSC.
The Argonauts took a 1-0 lead 15 minutes into the action when Shelby Bush headed a ball into the goal off a corner kick by Chelsea Palmer. Sashana Campbell put West Florida up 2-0 at 23:28 guiding a shot from atop the goalkeeper's box into the left side of the goal. West Florida had an 8-2 shot advantage over Union in the opening half.

Kayleigh Patterson knocked a shot home that flew past West Florida goalkeeper Sarah Story on its way to the upper left corner of the goal at 75:41 for a 2-1 score. The Lady Bulldogs almost got a late goal to level the contest. With less than five minutes remaining, Patterson launched a shot that bounced off the right goalpost.
Sara Johnson got the rebound of the Patterson ball and returned a kick to the goal frame seconds later, which narrowly sliced by the right goalpost.
Union matched West Florida with three shots in the second half. For the game West Florida had 10 corner kicks, while Union took none. Union committed 12 fouls, to ten for West Florida.
Union plays at home again October 20 at 2:00 p.m. against the University of West Alabama.
