Union women's soccer wins 1-0 over Delta State

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University women's soccer team picked up a 1-0 win over Delta (Miss.) State University. The victory was the first in almost two weeks for the Lady Bulldogs, whose previous win was Oct. 1. The positive result was also the first Gulf South Conference win for Union since Sept. 15. Union currently is 4-3-3 overall, 2-1-2 in the Gulf South Conference. Delta State dropped to 3-7-1 overall, 1-3-1 in GSC play.

Kelsey Wilkes got the home side going early. Sara Johnson played a ball to Wilkes, who guided the ball into the left side of the goal past Delta State goalkeeper Megan Galloway barely four minutes into the action for a 1-0 Lady Bulldogs edge. Emily Waggoner, the Union goalkeeper helped keep Delta State off the scoreboard turning aside two scoring attempts.

Each team increased their shot attempts in the second half, but none of the combined 13 shots resulted in a goal. Union recorded seven shots in the closing frame, up from six in the first 45 minutes. Galloway was kept busy making saves on six of the 13 total Union shots. Delta State rattled six shots in the second, doubling their three from the opening half.

Delta State took three corner kicks in the match, all in the second half. The two Union corners were taken in the first half. Union was called offside eight times, Delta State twice. Fouls were even at 13 apiece.

Union is set to host No. 8 West Florida at 4:30 p.m., Friday. West Florida is the defending NCAA DII National Champions.
