VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Union University women's basketball team posted a 54-50 win at Valdosta State University Thursday night. Union improved to 13-5 on the season and a league best 8-2 in the Gulf South Conference. Valdosta State dropped to 10-8 overall and 3-7 in league play.

The first 10 minutes of play had both teams going back and forth in a very slow paced, defensive struggle. With just over 10 minutes left in the half, the game was tied 10-10. Union scored five straight points to take and gather a little momentum. Union led by as many as six points in the first half, before taking a 24-20 lead into the break.
In the second half, Union quickly scored to go up by six points, 26-20. But the Lady Blazers rallied back with a 9-0 run to take their largest lead of the game, 29-26. Union responded and tied the game 31-31, then took the lead for good on a layup by
Astrid Huttemann.
Union led by as many as eight points in the game, 52-44 with 17 seconds left. Valdosta State hit a two 3-pointers in the final eight seconds, including a half-court bank shot at the buzzer to set the final at 54-50.
Union made 7-of-9 free throws in the final two minutes to seal the win.

Amy Philamlee with a game-high 16 points in just 20 minutes of play because of foul trouble.
Christina Coney and Huttemann each added 10 points.
LaTesa McLaughlin grabbed 10 rebounds in the game. Union struggled shooting the ball, shooting 34 percent from the field and 19 percent (5-27) from behind the arc. Union made 65 percent (13-20) of their free throws.
Valdosta State was led by Brittney Nelson and Kourtney Williams with 13 points each. Courtney Sprague added 10 points. The Lady Blazers shot 37 percent from the field, 25 percent (4-16) from 3-point range, and 57 percent (4-7) from the free throw line.
Up next for Union will be the second game on this long two-game road trip when the Lady Bulldogs play at West Florida Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
