JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University men's basketball team posted a 54-49 win over Delta State (Miss.) University. Union improved to 3-8 on the season and 1-2 in the Gulf South Conference. Delta State dropped to 4-6 overall and 0-2 in league play.
With just over two minutes left in the game, Union and Delta State were knotted at 49-49. After Delta State missed a 3-pointer, Union grabbed the long rebound and started the fast break.
Roy Bullock found
Pedro Faller on the right wing and Faller drained the 3-pointer to give Union the lead for good. After another missed shot by the Statesmen, Union got the ball back and melted the shot clock. Bullock then hit a jumper in the lane to put Union up 54-49 with just over 30 seconds left. Delta State missed their shot and Union was able to run out the clock to seal the win.
The win for Union snapped a 3-game skid.
Delta State opened the game with a 3-pointer from Terry Leake, but the rest of the half belonged to Union. Union answered and with seven straight points to led 7-3 at the 15:42 mark. Union led by as many as 14 points in the first half, 21-7, with 5:50 left to play. Delta State rallied late in the half to cut the Bulldog lead to seven points, 31-24 at the break.
In the second half, Delta State continued to rally and with 11:46 left to play, took the lead 41-39. The game featured two ties and two lead changes over the final 10 minutes, before Faller's late 3-pointer gave Union the lead for good.
Union was led by Bullock with 15 points. Bullock has scored 39 points over the last two games, including a career-high 24 in Union's game at No. 13 Kentucky Wesleyan. Faller added 12 points on four 3-pointers, while
Corieon Pearson scored 11 points. Union shot 42 percent from the field, 41 percent (9-22) from long range, and 64 percent (7-11) from the free throw line.
Delta State was led by Terry Leake and Jackson Madgen with 12 points each. The Statesmen shot 34 percent from the field, 24 percent (4-17) from long range, and 82 percent (9-11) from the free throw line.
