Union men shoot past West Georgia 79-55

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University men's basketball team posted a 79-55 win over the University of West Georgia Saturday afternoon at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Union improved to 4-13 on the season and 2-7 in the Gulf South Conference. West Georgia dropped to 7-10 overall and 4-5 in league play.
 
Union shot 62 percent from the field in and 50 percent (5-10) from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes. Union bolted out to a 42-29 lead at the break.
 
Union started the game with a 6-0 run and never looked back. After just six minutes of play, Union led 20-6. West Georgia cut the deficit down to eight points at the 5:18 mark, but Union extended their lead by as many as 16 points, 42-26. A 3-pointer at the end of the first half for West Georgia set the deficit at 13 going into the locker room.
 
In the first 10 minutes of the second half, Union stretched their lead to a game-high 27 points, 61-34. Union cruised down the stretch for the 79-55 win. The win for Union snapped a 5-game losing streak.
 
Union was led by senior forward Anthony Freeman with a game-high 25 points and nine rebounds. Corieon Pearson added 16 points and nine assists. Pedro Faller scored 12 points, all coming from his four 3-pointers. Dani Marti added 11 points with three 3-pointers. Union shot 50 percent from the field, 42 percent (8-19) from behind the arc, and 85 percent (11-13) from the charity stripe.
 
West Georgia was led by Quincy Hill with 25 points. Sean Boston scored 12 points and Deontre Brown added 10 points. The Wolves shot 38 percent from the field, 21 percent (3-14) from long range, and 53 percent (8-15) from the free throw line.
 
Up next for Union will be a extended road trip. The Bulldogs will play at Valdosta State (Ga.) Thursday, January 31 and then travel over to West Florida for a Saturday game, February 2.
