Union women hold on for 74-69 win at West Alabama

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Union University women's basketball team defeated the University of West Alabama 74-69 Thursday night on the road. Union improved to 11-5 on the season, and 6-2 in the Gulf South Conference. West Alabama dropped to 8-8 overall and 3-5 in league play.
 
Union trailed by four points a few times early in the game, including 16-12 at the 11:25 minute mark. Union then posted a 14-0 run over the next four minutes to lead 26-16. Union led by as many as 11 points, 38-27, in the first half, before taking a 39-29 lead into the locker room.
 
In the second half, West Alabama stayed close and slowly began to rally. With 7:30 left in the game, West Alabama took a 57-56 lead. Both teams swapped one-point leads five times over the next five minutes. With the game tied at 66-66 at the 2:14 mark, Union regained control with a 5-0 run sparked by a 3-pointer form Amy Philamlee. Despite missing 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch, layups from Philamlee and LaTesa McLaughlin helped Union maintain the lead and win 74-69.
 
Union shot 61 percent from the field in the second half (14-23) and made 3-of-7 3-pointers for 43 percent in the second half. Union however, gave up 22 second chance points in the game as West Alabama outrebounded Union 38-32 in the game, including 15 offensive rebounds. The Tigers also made up ground in the second half, making 5-of-9 (56%) from 3-point range. Union helped secure the win by forcing 12 turnovers, while committing just seven in the game.
 
Union was led by Philamlee with 20 points, including that lone 3-pointer late in the game to put Union up for good. She also added eight assists in the game. Christian Coney recorded a career-high 18 points as she helped fill the void left by injured Shelby Ashcraft who did not play in the game. McLauglin added 10 points and seven assists in the game. Astrid Huttemann and Amber Rechis each added nine points, combining for five 3-pointers in the win. Union shot 49 percent from the field, 33 percent (7-21) from long range, and just 50 percent (11-22) from the free throw line.
 
West Alabama's Jamie Gunter led four players in double figures with a game-high 22 points, including two 3-pointers. Brittany Weathers added 15 points with three 3-pointers. Nikkia Jordan and Tamya Thompson added 10 points. The Tigers shot 40 percent from the field, 50 percent (7-14) from 3-point range, and 78 percent (18-23) from the free throw line.
 
Up next for Union will be a home conference game, Saturday at 2:00 p.m. versus West Georgia.
