LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Union University men's basketball team dropped a road conference game 71-41 at the University of West Alabama Thursday night. Union dropped to 3-13 on the season and 1-7 in the Gulf South Conference. West Alabama improved to 7-8 overall and 3-5 in league play.
Union led 4-2 early, but West Alabama took control and did not look back. The Tigers quickly pushed their lead to double-figures and held their largest lead of the half, 35-16, going into the locker room. Union committed 12 first half turnovers and struggled from the field.
In the second half, Union cut the lead down to nine points, 39-30, thanks to a 14-4 run to start the half. But Union went cold again, allowing an 11-0 run by West Alabama as they regained control. The 30 point lead at the end of the game was the largest lead of the game for West Alabama.
West Alabama outscored Union 36-12 in the paint, and 33-2 in points off the bench.
Union was led by
AJ Roberts with 14 points, including three 3-pointers.
Roy Bullock added 13 points and two 3-pointers. Union shot 30 percent from the field, 33 percent (8-24) from behind the arc, and 50 percent (1-2) from the free throw line.
West Alabama was led by Steven Samuels with 25 points, including three 3-pointers. Mychal Bester added 14 points and Desmond Raymond scored 11 points. West Alabama shot 50 percent from the field, 40 percent (6-15) from long range, and 54 percent (7-13) from the free throw line.
Up next for Union will be a home conference game, Saturday at 4:00 p.m. versus West Georgia.
