FLORENCE, Ala. – The Union University women's basketball team posted a 54-49 road win at the University of North Alabama. Union improved to 9-4 on the season and 4-1 in the Gulf South Conference. North Alabama, who is receiving votes in the latest NCAA DII rankings, dropped to 11-4 on the season and 4-1 in league play.
Union trailed 24-21 at the half, but outscored the Lions 33-25 in the second half.
Union opened the second half with an 8-0 run, including a pair of 3-pointers from
Astrid Huttemann. Union extended their second half lead to as many as 13 points, 42-29, with 8:42 left in the game.
However, the home Lions were not done. North Alabama cut the Union lead down to two points, 48-46, with just over two minutes left in the game. But Union never lost the lead, getting a layup from
LaTesa McLaughlin and making 4-of-6 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
In the first half that featured five ties and seven lead changes, both teams led by as many as three points.
Union was led by Huttemann with 20 points and 10 rebounds. She was 3-of-6 from 3-point range. Union shot 30 percent from the field, 27 percent (4-15) from long range, and 64 percent (18-28) from the free throw line.
North Alabama was led by Mekena Randle with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Lauren Faris added nine points. The Lions shot 33 percent from the field, 25 percent (4-16) from 3-point range, and 74 percent (17-23) from the free throw line.
Up next for Union will be a home conference game, Thursday, January 17 versus Alabama-Huntsville at 6:00 p.m.
