Union volleyball fights hard, falls in four sets to Alabama-Huntsville

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University volleyball team lost to the University of Alabama-Huntsville 3-1 (21-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-22) Saturday at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Union dropped to 3-10 on the season and 0-6 in the Gulf South Conference. Alabama-Huntsville improved to 8-7 overall and 2-3 in league play.
                     
Union was down 12-8 in the first set, but slowly began to rally and cut the deficit to 17-15. Union then posted seven straight points with senior Lauren Sprouse serving. Union never let go of the lead as they closed out the first set victory.
 
In the second set, Union led 6-5 early, but allowed a 7-0 run from Alabama-Huntsville. With Union down 13-8, the Lady Bulldogs posted a run of their own, scoring nine of the next 10 points to lead 17-14. But Alabama-Huntsville regained momentum with five straight points to lead 19-17. The teams were back and forth and as they settled on 23-23. Alabama-Huntsville got the next two points to tie the match at 1-1.
 
Union lead again 6-5 in the third set before another big run from the visiting Chargers. Eight straight points to started a 10-1 run left Union in catch-up mode for the remainder of the set.
 
The fourth set was close all the way through with neither team able to pull away. Union got to 21-21 late, but it was the Chargers who closed out the set and the match.
 
Union was led by Kristin Cook with nine kills, while Savannah Hughes added seven kills. Linsey Mirtsching and Lydia Wright shared the assists load, recording 13 and 11 assists respectively. Mallory Baker led with two aces, Micaela Bailey led with 12 digs, and Cook led with seven blocks.
 
Alabama-Huntsville was led by Angela Thurmond with 16 kills and Kelsey Williams with 15 kills. Kelly Wilson dished out 38 assists and also led with two aces. Kennedie Lariscy and Haley Snyder led with 16 and 12 digs respectively. Williams added four blocks.
 
Up next for Union will be their last of a streak of seven straight home games when Union host Christian Brothers University Tuesday, October 2 at 7:00 p.m.
