JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University men's basketball team fell 77-60 at home to the University of West Florida Saturday evening. Union dropped their fifth straight to fall to 1-5 on the season and 0-2 in the Gulf South Conference. West Florida improved to 6-1 overall and 1-1 in league play.
The first half was played close as both teams went back and forth to produce 10 lead changes and five ties. Union held their largest lead of four points, 18-14, with 9:03 left in the half. West Florida led by as many as five points in the first half twice, with the latest coming 35-30 with 1:30 left. West Florida held a 38-35 lead at the half.
After scoring 35 points in the first half, Union was held to just 25 points in the second half and was outscored 14 points in the final 20 minutes.
In the second half, Union stayed close and were down just two points, 45-43 with 14:38 left to play. West Florida then posted a 9-0 run to push their lead to double figures for the first time. Union got as close as eight points with seven minutes left, but got no closer. West Florida outscored Union 15-6 over the final seven minutes to clinch the win.
Union was led by
Corieon Pearson with 17 points, including three 3-pointers.
Anthony Freeman scored 13 points, with 11 of those points coming in the first half. Dani Marti added a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds.
Pedro Faller scored 11 points, all coming in the first half. Union shot 40 percent from the field, 39 percent (7-18) from long range, and 69 percent (11-16).
West Florida was led by Terrence Beasley with a game-high 24 points, including 17 points in the second half and 12 total points coming from the free throw line. Ellis Young scored 16 points and Peter Connole added 11 points. Nate Johnson grabbed 10 rebounds for the Argonauts. West Florida shot 48 percent from the field, 31 percent (4-13) from behind the arc, and 68 percent (15-22) from the free throw line.
Up next for Union will be four straight non-conference games, starting with a home game versus Champion Baptist Tuesday, December 4 at 7:00 p.m.
