Union pulls away with 77-57 win over Maryville

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Union University women's basketball team posted a 77-57 win over Maryville (Mo.) University in the O'Reilly Classic hosted by Drury (Mo.) University. Union evened their record at 2-2 on the season and avoided their first 3-game skid since December 2005. Maryville, who is receiving votes in the NCAA DII polls, dropped to 1-2 on the season.
                     
Sophomore guard Amy Philamlee posted a career high 25 points in the win. The guard shot 9-of-12 from the field, including 2-of-4 from behind the arc. She also made all five of her free throws with six assists, six rebounds and three steals. Philamlee was one of four Union players to score double figures. Kelsey Risner finished with 14 points, including 3-of-6 from behind the arc. Risner scored eight straight points during a stretch in the second half as Maryville began to rally. Shelby Ashcraft scored 11 points with nine rebounds, while LaTesa McLaughlin added 10 points.
 
After Maryville scored first in the game to lead 2-0, Union's McLaughlin sank two straight three pointers to give Union the lead. Union never trailed after that point and led by as many as 20 points. Union led by as many as 13 in the first half, and held a 35-25 lead at the half.
 
In the second half, Union went back up by 12 points, 42-30. However, Maryville began to rally and after a 12-2 run, had cut Union's lead down to just to points with 12 minutes left in the game. However, this is when Risner stepped up with a pair of free throws and a pair of three pointers to put Union back up by double figures. Union continued to extend their lead to win 77-57.
 
Union shot 41 percent from the field, 33 percent (10-30) from long range, and 85 percent (17-20) from the free throw line.
 
Maryville was led by Abby Duethman with 17 points. The Saints shot 33 percent from the field, 17 percent (3-18) from behind the arc, and 75 percent (12-16) from the free throw line.
 
Up next for Union will be a game versus the host and NCAA DII No. 25 Drury University Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
