Union men’s basketball falls 83-71 at Southeastern Oklahoma State

DURANT, Okla. – The Union University men's basketball team fell short in an 83-71 loss at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Union dropped to 1-1 on the season, while Southeastern Oklahoma State improved to 2-0.
 
The young Bulldogs fell behind early, trailing by as many as 18 points in the first half. It came with 6:50 left in the half when Union found themselves down 37-19. However, Union rallied and in the final minute of the half, had cut the deficit to just two points, 44-42. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Union's Corieon Pearson sparked a run for Union that helped the Bulldogs outscore Southeastern 23-9 in the final six minutes of the half. A basketball in the final seconds by the Savage Storm of Southeastern set the halftime score at 46-42.
 
In the second half, Union was able to take their first lead at 50-49 on another three pointer from Pearson. Union led again 52-51 with 15:57 left in the game. But Southeastern Oklahoma State responded with a 16-0 run to jump back up by 15 points, 67-52.
 
Union trailed by 18 points with 9:06 left, 72-54. But like in the first half, Union was able to manufacture one final rally as the Bulldogs cut the lead down to six, 77-71, with just under two minutes left. Union missed on a couple of shot attempts and Southeastern made free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
 
Union was led by Anthony Freeman, Jr. with a game-high 24 points. Roy Bullock, III added 13 points including three 3-pointers. Pearson scored 12 points including three 3-pointers, and AJ Roberts added 11 points. Dani Marti grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Pearson also led with six assists. Union shot 50 percent from the field, 35 percent (8-23) from behind the arc, and 70 percent (7-10) from the free throw line.
 
Southeastern Oklahoma State was led by Travis Timmons with 20 points. James Harris added 19 points including five 3-pointers. Steven Kohli scored 15 points and Chris Roussell added 10 points. Timmons completed his double-double with a game-high 10 assists. The Savage Storm shot 50 percent from the field, 46 percent (12-26) from 3-point range, and 61 percent (11-18) from the free throw line.
 
Up next for Union will be another road game Saturday at 4:00 p.m. at Henderson State (Ark.). After that, Union returns home for a second chance at Southeastern Oklahoma State, Tuesday, November 20 at 7:00 p.m.
