Before Union
Mitchell prepped at West Plains (Mo.) High School where he ran cross country and track, and also played a season of basketball. He led his cross country team to three Ozark Conference titles, three district titles and one sectional title. His team has state championship finishes of second in 2009, fourth in 2010 and third in 2011. In track, Mitchell's teams earned two conference titles, a district and section title and two appearances in the state championships. Mitchell was named all-conference three times, all-district three times and all-sectional twice in cross country. He added all-conference, all-district and all-sectional three times each and one all-state honor in track. During his career, he helped continue a streak for his school of 34 straight state appearances in cross country and track. Off the course, Mitchell was a member of the National Honor Society and honor roll.
