Between his playing career and returning to Union to coach, Rushing spent time as a coach at South Side High School and Lambuth University.

Rushing led Union baseball to 30 or more wins in 14 of his 17 seasons at the helm, including 11 straight. In fact, the only three times his win total was less than 30 was 29 twice and 27 once. While at Union, Rushing led the Bulldogs to a 582-362 (62%) record. In his 21 total years as a college baseball coach, Rushing has a record of 664-460 (60%). In baseball at Union, Rushing led his teams to two conference regular season titles and one conference tournament title. He led his teams to seven NAIA Region Tournaments. He was named TCAC Coach of the year twice, TranSouth Conference Coach of the Year twice, NCCAA MidEast Region Coach of the Year, NAIA Region Coach of the year twice, and ABCA Region coach of the Year twice. He spent 10 years as the Chairman of the Conference Baseball Committee and also served as the Region Chair for six years.

In men's golf, Rushing won the TranSouth Conference Title five times in the nine years as head coach. He led his team to three trips to the NAIA National Championships, and posted a runner-up finish in the NCCAA National Championships. He was named TranSouth Coach of the Year four times in golf.

Rushing was tasked with starting the Union women's golf program from scratch. He led the women's team to its first tournament title in the first year of competition in 2012.

In his college coaching career, Rushing lead four college programs including football (Lambuth), baseball, men's golf, and women's golf (Union). He has earned conference titles in three of the sports (football, baseball, and men's golf). He also started two programs in his career, resurrecting Lambuth's football team in 1985 that had been shutdown since 1947 and starting the Union women's golf program in 2012.

Rushing, a graduate of Jackson North Side High School, and his wife Susan have remained in Jackson all their lives. They have three children and three grandchildren. Rushing is also a member of the Jackson Madison County Sports Hall of Fame. He is still teaching classes at Union and also teaches baseball to youth through lessons and clinics.
